چکیده

Accurate determination of denudation rates is important in understanding Earth surface system dynamics. In situ produced cosmogenic nuclides, such as Be and Al, provide a valuable insight but are not entirely free from complications. In this study, denudation rates are determined for the Abukuma Mountains, Japan, using both site-specific and basin-scale methods. Considered with density measured in the field, distinct and systematic differences between the two methods are identified. Site-specific rates calculated from depth profiles of cosmogenic nuclides (Be and Al) at topographic highs indicate a rate of 67 to 85 mm/kyr, whereas basin-scale averaged denudation rates derived from the concentration of cosmogenic nuclides in fluvial sediments show 114 to 180 mm/kyr. This is the first comparison of these two commonly used methods in the same region in Japan, where the entire study area is characterized by well-developed saprolite. These results indicate that differential denudation rates between topographic highs and valleys reflect increasing local topographic relief of the study area. Comparison between rates derived from depth profiles and those applicable to the entire basin is important for understanding landscape development.

Measurement of long-term denudation rates in carbonate landscapes using in situ-produced 36Cl cosmogenic nuclide

ecent progresses have been made in the quantification of denudation of eroding landscapes and its links with topography. Despite these advances, data is still sparse in carbonate terrain, which covers a significant part of the Earth’s surface. We can now measure in situ-produced cosmogenic nuclides concentrations in various near-surface materials, allowing accurate quantification of the rates o...

The control mechanisms of erosion and weathering at basin scale from cosmogenic nuclides in river sediment

The study of a sample of river sediment enables the determination of spatially averaged denudation rates that provide an exceptional perspective on erosion and weathering processes that have taken place within a landscape. These measurements are done with in-situ produced cosmogenic nuclides (e.g. Be, Al), mostly in quartz from alluvial sediment. Cosmogenic nuclides are produced when secondary ...

Earth is (mostly) flat: apportionment of the flux of continental sediment over millennial time scales

We use a new compilation of global denudation estimates from cosmogenic nuclides to calculate the apportionment and the sum of all sediment produced on Earth by extrapolation of a statistically significant correlation between denudation rates and basin slopes to watersheds without denudation rate data. This robust relationship can explain approximately half of the variance in denudation from qu...

Estimation of sedimentation and erosion using MPSIAC, FSM and direct measurement methods in Gabric watershed, South-eastern of Iran

Extended abstract 1- Introduction      Soil erosion, as one of the most important environmental problems in the world, has a devastating effect on all life, natural resources and it's under human management. Considering that one of the important goals in the management of drainage of basins such as Gabric basin is preventing soil erosion, and also one of the important factors when designing d...

Estimating Rates of Denudation Using Cosmogenic Isotope Abundances in Sediment

We propose, as a testable hypothesis, a basin-scale approach for interpreting the abundance of in situ produced cosmogenic isotopes, an approach which considers explicitly both the isotope and sediment flux through a drainage basin. Unlike most existing models, which are appropriate for evaluating in situ produced cosmogenic isotope abundance at discrete points on Earth’s surface, our model is ...
